Ofcom makes new regulations to amend licence exemption criteria for short range devices
Ofcom has confirmed that following consultation, it has made new regulations to amend the existing Wireless Telegraphy licence exemption criteria for short range devices (SRDs).
SRDs are devices that use spectrum without the need for a licence. They include everyday items such as car key-fobs and baby monitors.
The regulations implement a decision by the European Commission that harmonises the frequencies and technical parameters for these devices across Europe. This enables people to use various kinds of SRDs in the UK without a licence.
The changes have been made under the Wireless Telegraphy (Exemption and Amendment) (Amendment) Regulations 2018 and come into force on 21 March 2018.
Details of separate regulations concerning mobile phone repeaters will be announced shortly.
